If you’re visiting Nepal and thinking about getting a tattoo in Kathmandu, this page will answer the questions most international clients ask before booking with me.

I’m Sumina Shrestha, a tattoo artist based in Thamel, Kathmandu. I’ve been tattooing professionally for over 9 years, and a significant part of my clients travel from abroad – from Germany, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, France, Korea, Japan, Australia, and beyond. Getting tattooed in Kathmandu has become part of many people’s Nepal experience, and I want to make sure yours goes well.

1. Can I book a tattoo in Nepal from abroad?

Yes and most of my international clients book before they arrive. You don’t need to be in Kathmandu to start the process. All appointments are handled through my website or via my instagram (@suminu.tattoo).

To book, please send:

  • Your tattoo idea (reference images help)
  • Size and placement
  • Preferred dates in Kathmandu
  • Any relevant details about your design

I personally read every inquiry. If your project is something I can do well and the timing works, I’ll write back with next steps. I work by appointment only

How far in advance should you book? At least two to four weeks before you arrive, ideally more during peak trekking seasons (October–November and March–April). I book up during those periods, so earlier is better.

2. Should you get a tattoo before or after trekking in Nepal?

This is one of the most common questions I get, and the answer is clear: get your tattoo after your trek, not before. Trekking puts real stress on your body – sweat, friction from pack straps and clothing, dust, sun exposure, and the physical effort of altitude.

A fresh tattoo needs the opposite environment to heal well. Clients who’ve gotten tattooed before a trek have come back with healing problems. It’s not worth the risk.

After your trek, give yourself at least three to five days in Kathmandu before flying home. That recovery window makes a genuine difference in how your tattoo heals.

Recommended:Avoid:
✔️ After your trek – your body is rested, and healing is easier
✔️ Allow at least 3–5 days in Kathmandu after your session
❌ Getting tattooed right before a trek (sweat, friction, dust affect healing)
❌ High sun exposure, swimming, or intense physical activity immediately after

3. How does payment work for international clients?

Payment is in Nepali rupees (NPR) cash, which is easy to access from ATMs in Thamel and across Kathmandu. International bank transfers can be arranged in advance if needed, just mention it when you reach out.
A non-refundable deposit may be required to confirm your appointment. This goes toward the total cost of your tattoo.

4. What language are consultations in?

Everything is in English – consultations, design discussions, the session itself, and aftercare guidance. I work with international clients regularly, so language has never been a barrier.

5. How does tattoo healing work when you’re traveling? Healing Tips (Altitude, Travel & Climate)

Healing while traveling is manageable if you plan for it. Here’s what matters most:

Here are a few simple tips:

  • Stay hydrated, especially after flights or trekking
  • Avoid tight clothing over the tattoo area
  • Keep the tattoo clean and moisturized
  • Limit dust exposure, sun, and sweating during early healing
  • Avoid swimming or saunas for at least 2 weeks

If you’re continuing your travels, I’ll guide you with aftercare suited to your plans or view a simple Tattoo aftercare routine here.

6. Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a tattoo cost at Suminu Tattoo in Kathmandu?

Pricing depends on size, detail, and time. I don’t publish a fixed rate list because every piece is custom. Investments start from a minimum charge for small work and scale from there. I’ll give you a clear estimate once I understand your project.

Can I get a tattoo in Kathmandu during a short visit?

Yes, if the timing works. Tell me exactly how many days you have and I’ll let you know what’s possible. Even a two-day window can work for the right piece.

Do you do custom designs or only flash?

Almost all of my work is fully custom designed around your idea, your body, and what you want it to mean. I usually don’t work from a flash menu but open to it.

What styles do you specialize in?

Fine line tattoos, minimal tattoos, anime tattoos, color work, and custom illustrative designs. I’ve won Best of Day at the Nepal Tattoo Convention 2025 for fine line work.

Will you reply to my inquiry?

I try to reply to everyone. During busy periods it may take a few days, but I read every message personally.

Is Kathmandu a good destination for a tattoo trip?

It’s become exactly that for many travelers. The combination of a meaningful trip to Nepal and a custom tattoo made here with the time and intention that comes with travel is something people don’t find at their local studio. Several of my clients have told me the tattoo became the most lasting part of their Nepal experience.

A Personal Note

I personally manage all bookings and communication. Many of my clients travel long distances to be here, and I truly value that trust. If you feel connected to my work and approach, I’d love to hear your idea.
